Forget self-driving cars until it's like taking your own personal train

Tesla claims it will have completely self-driving cars on the road - in any weather - within two years.

But what’s the point when you have to stop every 3-4 hours to recharge?

Kinja'd!!!

Now this thing - when GM builds an Escalade with self driving technology, and I can fill ‘er up and then go to sleep for nine hours while it whisks the whole family away to grandma’s house - I’ll be first in line.

(I’m not saying Grandma’s house is only 9 hours away, but that’s about how long I can drive on a full tank before we have to stop for fuel, which means the wife and kids can sleep all night if I can just keep my liquid intake - and more particularly output - in check).

I gotta say, if there’s one thing I know about Elon is that he doesn’t say he is going to do something unless he’s like 99% sure it’s true.

That’s hilarious - I forgot about that article!

And he’s right - I had to pee on the way back from a wrestling trip on time (we drove all night), and as bad as I had to go I just couldn’t let go and pee in an empty gatorade bottle.

At this point I’m a pro in the proper amount of dehydration / slow caffeine intake to maintain alertness without having to stop for the full stint.

And I can be 99% sure that the sky is green and the grass is blue, but it doesn’t make it so. He’s a competent engineer, but like all engineers he allways wildly underestimates costs and time frames.

I’m not doubting him - I just think this is the weakest use case for autonomous driving in such a limited range vehicle.

8-9 hours (600+ miles) in a Suburban or even a Chevy Volt? Sure!

3 hours (250-ish miles) in the Model S? Not pointless, but certainly not replacing airline travel (or a good US replacement for a European sleeper car) like something with some actual range.

I was referring to everything he says being pretty much built, just not released to the public. So far, the hyperloop is the only thing that wasn't released soon after.

What’s the point? The point is that the vast majority of trips for the vast majority of people in the entire world are less than 3-4 hours. Less than 1 hour.

If self driving cars can serve the vast majority of car trips undertaken by the world, bring them on. That’s fucking awesome.

Don’t write them off completely because they can’t pull the same distance as the absolute longest range ICE vehicles.

Will the car drive less like a dick than the people piloting them now?

Love the new generation of Escalade’s...such an awesome looking SUV. It does have radar distance control, so there is some autonomous tech in there. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the General come out with something soon that says they are working on a self driving car. Probably be shown in a Volt or (more likely) the new CT6.

The CT6 is supposed to have “Supercruise” which is more-or-less autopilot. It has been announced already.

The Suburban/Escalade is a bit of hyperbole, but most automakers size their gas tanks to provide around 400 miles of range.

The Model S gives 275? The 80% charge number is only 220?

I really wasn’t entertained by the article a few weeks back about having to take the scenic route - and take TWO DAYS - to get to the Detroit auto show from NYC. 615 miles. Skills have been an 8.5-10 hour drive.

Even a relatively thirsty M3 only has to fill up once. The Tesla already takes far longer to “fill up” - and would need to charge twice.

I get wanting to Facebook on your commute a more safely than you do right now.

But the true utility is in assisting when drivers are fatigued.

And so it’s incredibly ironic to me that this autonomous stuff is debuting on cars like the Model S with nearly the shortest range of any production car.

Seems like you’re trying to be funny here, but I think you’ve got the wrong brand.

Lots of hate for BMW, Porsche, Audi, Ferrari, and Camry drivers. Cadillac drivers on balance may be a bit unaware of their surroundings like any good blue haired Mercedes or Buick driver. But I don’t think “dick” is the right word.

You may need to study up on your automotive stereotypes.

It’s a shame that GM couldn’t pull a Tesla and build in the hardware, then announce a full year later that the software is ready and just update a bunch of cars already on the road.

But there’s not a chance in hell of that happening.

I work in sales at a GM dealership and I knew something was in the pipeline but wasn’t really covered in our initial CT6 training. I can’t wait to actually drive one it is so light for its size and that 3.0L V6TT has a ton of torque.

I guess it’s not actually ready yet, so there wouldn’t be anything to train on.

The people with money in SF who had a Prius upgraded to Teslas, so they were terrible, also I think smug hipster early adopters got them, I notice old guys who like tech and probably have Macs are everywhere and aren’t very observant, probably retired and don’t give a shit. They love to wait until the last minute to cut in, they know where they are going, I commute ever morning, I have lots of experience. If I see an AZ license plate I can’t blame them for being lost in the SF mess, the streets were designed for horses and carriages. The BMW suvs are pretty bad too. Almost no Caddys, for Caddys only Escalades and I don’t see any Buicks in SF, everyone buys German or Japanese, now Tesla too.

It’ll get better. So the first ever mass-produced fully autonomous car doesn’t also have a huge range. It helps commuters, a far more common case than the occasional road trip. And it will only get better from here.

Oooh, you meant the Teslas the whole time.

I’m sorry - that was my bad. I’m 100% with you. There’s not a car on the planet that emits more smug than a Tesla.
